Today I want to give you some advice if you have been at this online game for 6 months, a year, or even longer and you are still not having any success. So let’s get right to it.
One of the most common things people say to me is that they have been marketing online for several months, a year or sometimes even longer than that and they still have not had any success, they are still not making any money, and their online business essentially is still in the same place today as it was 6 months or a year ago.
They ask me “What am I doing wrong?” or “What should I be doing differently?”
The thing that I normally recommend is that you narrow your focus. You need to pick one topic and become an expert or a specialist at that topic, that niche, or that field. You don’t do anything else, you don’t start another project, and you don’t do anything until you finish that one. Either get it to the point where it is making money for you or you have decided it is not something that is going to work and you have essentially abandoned it.
When you’re trying to work on multiple projects or multiple websites at the same time, neither one of them really gets your primary or your best focus so both of those projects end up suffering.
The first thing I want you to do is to list all of your websites, all of your products, everything that you have been doing essentially since you started online; whether that be 6 months or a year ago, however long that may be. I want you to write beside each of those items exactly how much time you have invested versus how much money it has generated for you. Then I want you to pick one item on that list to focus on, that can be something that has made you a little bit of money or something that you feel has potential to make a profitable return.
Now you need to spend some time and create quality content. Give something of value with no strings attached to create goodwill with your new prospects.
The exact same goes for your method of traffic generation.
Don’t try to do PPC, SEO and article marketing and all these different things. Focus on one to begin with and start getting traffic and prospects from it. Then start to scale it out and add more methods of traffic.
Just a quick reminder, if you do pick SEO traffic generation, SEO is not free; there is a time commitment to that. Even though there is a perception out there that SEO is free traffic, I actually have three full-time link builders that do most of the SEO for most of my sites and I can tell you every two weeks when I pay them that SEO traffic is definitely not free.
To quickly recap, if you have not had any success online or you are still looking for your first big success online, narrow your focus. Pick one topic and become an expert at it. Create content and links and put all of your focus into that one product until it’s making money and then you can optimize for conversions or go into something else.
The biggest problem I see right now is that too many people are working on too many different projects before they really have any success with anything. There are a number of reasons for that and there are a number of different things we can blame for it. But the fact is still the same, if you want to have success and you want to build a successful online business, you need to have discipline and focus. That’s the first place I want you to start.
